Best Southeastern Wisconsin Craft Breweries
Milwaukee Brewing Company
Founded on the idea of using local ingredients and suppliers, Milwaukee Brewing Company quickly drew a local crowd. Since its inception in 1997, the company has produced 300 seasonal flavors with a focus on sustainability. Staff members strive to find green ways to produce their beer by cutting down on fuel, electricity, and glass usage. Although the brewery’s offerings change with each season, the company’s flagship beer, Louie’s Demise, remains a crowd favorite. The amber ale starts with rich malt and finishes with a smooth hop. There are two locations, one in the Historic Third Ward and another in the Arena District, but both offer indoor and outdoor seating in a relaxed atmosphere.
Lakefront Brewery
Lakefront Brewery has been around since 1987, and in April it was awarded Certified B Corporation status, meaning it meets the highest standards of social and environmental performance. It is the first brewery in Wisconsin and the 22nd brewery in the world to be certified. Although beer from the brewery is enjoyed globally, the company is committed to serving at least 75% local and independent clients. Lakefront boasts a robust beer menu with seasonal and year-round brews. One of its most popular summer drinks is Wisconsinite, which is made with malted wheat and Wisconsin-grown hops and barley.
Sprecher Brewing Company
The founder of Sprecher Brewing Company, Randy Sprecher, worked third shift at Pabst and devoted his spare time to perfecting a craft brew. Taking hints from the beers he drank while on military duty in Germany, Sprecher began experimenting. After Sprecher was let go from Pabst, he took his savings and starting his own brewery. What started as a small operation has transformed into a sprawling brewery in a renovated elevator cab factory. All Sprecher beers are fire brewed in a hand-built gas-fired brew kettle. Sprecher offers a variety of German-style beers, though its signature is Black Bavarian, a medium-bodied Schwarzbier, or black beer. The lager offers flavors of dark roasted coffee, caramel, and bittersweet chocolate.
Broken Bat Brewery
Broken Bat Brewery is a baseball-themed Milwaukee Brewery and taproom features Milwaukee made craft beers in a space with plentiful seating and multiple televisions for the spectator’s viewing pleasure Indoor wiffleball, expanded distribution, craft soda.. and so much more! Owners Tim and Dan say, “In baseball, when a bat breaks, it’s something unexpected. And that’s essentially what our beer is going to be like, what the brewery experience is going to be: something different, unexpected.” Broken Bat Brewery is excited for what the future holds and is a must-visit if you are in the area!
Good City Brewing
Their motto is “Seek the Good” and their core values as brewers include: (1) pursuing excellence, (2) prioritizing relationships, and (3) engaging our local place. In my opinion, you really can’t go wrong with that! You can hop on over to Good City‘s east side location to enjoy a summer evening on one of Milwaukee’s best rooftops! Good City recently opened a new location downtown Milwaukee, located right next to the Fiserv Forum. They have a taproom on the first floor serving 16 different beers on tap and offers fired pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, and other pub snacks. The second floor has an outdoor patio, which is also ideal for hosting an outdoor event!
Enlightened Brewing Company
Vennture Brewing
After traveling together, three photographer friends, Jake Rohde, Simon McConico, and Rob Gustafson started Vennture Brewing. “Making tasty beverages to make everyone’s life better”, is the motto of this coffee shop by day – brewery by night establishment. Located in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Milwaukee Wisconsin, Vennture brewing knows how to make a good cup of Joe to get your day going and just as good beer to wrap up your day.
Water Street Brewery
If you want to look at a piece of brewing history while you drink up, Water Street Brewery is the place to go. Established in 1987, the brewery has plenty of history by itself. However, between its four locations, the brewery has a collection of 50,000 antique beer cans, 1,400 beer tap knobs, and 25 original Wisconsin brewery lithographs. The brewery offers ambers, ales, stouts, and seasonals on a rotating schedule. One of the most popular beers, which is always on tap, is the Honey Lager Light. Clover honey and light barley malt are used to create the American-style lager.
Biloba Brewing Company
A few minutes away from downtown Milwaukee lies family-owned and operated Biloba Brewing Company. The microbrewery focuses on crafting unique beers using the simplest ingredients. The brewery is run by husband and wife duo Gordon and Jean Lane. Gordon retired from Briess Malting Company and wanted to realize his lifelong dream of opening a brewery. The brewery is most known for its growlers. One of its most popular growlers, Drop It Like It’s Hop, is a hoppy IPA with a citrus finish.
